Art Director and Designer
Annick Press Ltd. is seeking an Art Director for its innovative program of quality books for children and youth. The Art Director will contribute suggestions for illustrators and provide creative input, conceptualize and execute ideas, oversee design development, and design a number of titles. This role will entail working directly with the editorial and production staff, and will report to the Editorial Director.
Responsibilities include
• art directing book jackets, covers, and interiors for hardcovers, paperbacks, and ebooks for formats including board books, picture books, middle grade and young adult books, illustrated non-fiction, and other illustrated titles.
• creating and/or managing the design of top-quality, commercial designs for approximately twenty-five titles per year
• identifying, selecting, and liaising with illustrators, artists, and photographers. This includes reviewing artists and their portfolios, commissioning original art, and overseeing the creation of art for interiors and covers.
• assisting in organizing and facilitating cover and interior content meetings, and discussing and articulating visual and marketplace perspectives within these meetings.
• designing marketing and promotional materials as required.
• working closely with the Production department to manage schedules and create well organized and technically accurate files.
• reviewing color correction, proofs, and special finishes and design features, and working on best practices for and quality assurance of ebooks, in co-operation with the Production department.
• working closely with the Editorial Director and Managing Editors to monitor the stages of design and maintain schedules.
• overseeing the work of freelance designers and ensuring consistency in the preparation of files for print, as well as compliance with Annick style and design guides.
The ideal candidate has
• four years of previous design experience in children’s book publishing
• knowledge of the children’s book market, a passion for children’s books, and an aptitude for creative thinking
• a strong awareness of new art trends, artists, and illustrators
• demonstrated typesetting and design skills; an excellent understanding of design programs; and proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other desktop publishing packages
• knowledge of production as it relates to design, including knowledge of in-house proofing, color printing, and ebook formats in the children’s marketplace
• the skills to manage and organize with an ability to prioritize under tight deadlines
• excellent communication skills
• a willingness to be flexible in developing new roles and workflow
